After working for over a year with City officials behind the scenes on a plan to build community wealth in Rochester, members of the Democracy Collaborative Jessica Bonnano and Vie Duncan have shown the Rochester mayor and other leaders in economic development there that supporting worker cooperatives is a strategy that could uplift the city.
[Rochester] Mayor Lovely Warren wants to push forward with a plan to launch a network of businesses owned and operated by their workers — an idea meant to help build wealth and create jobs in some of the city's poorest neighborhoods... City officials have been working with a consultant, the Democracy Collaborative, for about a year on this plan. The consultant has done similar work in Cleveland and other cities. Warren plans to ask City Council next month for $150,000 to keep working with the collaborative and start carrying out a co-op plan this year.
